Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead Party!

November 3, 2014 by El Rio

Hola!

El Rio hosted its first Day of the Dead Party on Saturday 1st November & it was a massive success!

Traditionally  in Mexico its celebrated over a 4 day period & is a national holiday. Its to celebrate the lives of family or friends who have passed by building private alters, honouring them with sugar skulls, flowers, candles & celebration. On the evening we celebrated the life of Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter who’s work had been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national & indigenous tradition. Her work were mainly self portrait’s as in her words  ” I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best”.

El Rio kept within the traditions & threw a party!

Guests were invited to dress up, with free face painting all night, live DJ’s, fancy tequila cocktails. The team from Elements – Margaret River helped us capture the  night with amazing photography by Mark Boskell. We wanted to help the community so we enlisted the help of Nathan Rose, a famous local surfboard shaper & with the amazing artwork from Natasha Bostock who drew a custom made 6ft surfboard with sugar skulls painted throughout. All proceeds from the board were donated to the local Disabled Surfing WA – South West.

We are already looking forward to making next years a bigger & better event.

Cheers – the team at El Rio
